Redeeming September 25th

September 25th is a dark day in my life. I was sitting at my father’s hospital bed with my mom and brother, watching as his breathing grew more labored until, finally, he stopped altogether. David Joseph Caplin died at around 11am on the morning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, 2014. Not long before that, he had celebrated 34 years of marriage and got to dance with me in my wedding dress in the bridal suite at Catan’s Bridal, knowing he wouldn’t make it to the actual wedding day in December.

It’s been five years, and I’ve reached a point where I can think of him and share funny stories with genuine laughter and no tears. But it still hurts. It may always hurt.

Why choose the anniversary of my father’s death to release my new book? Because it fits with the theme of finding redemption in suffering; of “turning that crap into fertilizer.” It’s good to have something to look forward to on a day that is otherwise marked by sadness. And I believe that Dad would have approved.

I wish to thank everyone who helped with the publication process of this book: the beta readers, the early reviewers, and everyone who shared about this book on social media. Also a special thanks to Ed Cyzewski, author of Flee, Be Silent, Pray: Ancient Prayers for Anxious Christians, who wrote a lovely endorsement for this book:

“Depression, financial distress, political division, and job loss,Caplin doesn’t shy away from the big challenges of life that can leave us feeling lost or exhausted. This book is a welcome invitation to look at life with bracing honesty, while still finding the God who is present and compassionate.”

If you didn’t already pre-order a copy, you can purchase “Spinning Crap Into Fertilizer” here.

Thanks again, readers. None of this is possible without you.

  1. My grandma passed away September 27th of 2013. I cannot believe that it’s been 6 years. The pain never fully goes away. I’m gonna get a kindle copy of your book today. Can’t wait to read it.
